ART & EVENTS IN THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY

Art & History at Hotel Indigo

There may still be some construction fences now, but it is almost here!

Finding art in unexpected places is such a delightful experience. That moment when you turn a corner and are surprised with a vibrant mural, find a painting you love in a pop-up installation, or discover a carefully painted rock hidden in the landscape - these moments of joy elevate the experience of the everyday.

Those special touches are what really stand out at the Hotel Indigo, even as it is under construction. Every space is an opportunity to incorporate another artistic element or historic reference.

The hallway carpets resemble brick sidewalks dappled with sunlight breaking through leafy trees.

The tiles in the showers are laid out to resemble books lined up on a bookcase. Poetry will sprawl across the wall behind the front desk, and a custom-painted grandfather clock keeps time in the lobby, a nod to the clockmaking history of West Chester.

And, of course, there is art. The guest rooms will include a selection of pieces that celebrate the past of the town, from literature to trains to architecture. The iconic Chester County Courthouse, designed by famed architect Thomas U. Walter, is shown in stylized hues, while the actual building stands just a few blocks away. A portrait of Frederick Douglass is overlaid with the famous orator's own words.

And others are just for fun.

The town itself provides the view outside the large windows surrounding the building, especially in West Chester Seafood Kitchen, the restaurant which will be at the front corner of the building. Its bar is going to be the perfect spot to watch the hustle and bustle of Gay Street while enjoying a custom cocktail featuring unique and local ingredients.

Speaking of cocktails, if you get invited to Room 109, say yes. The speakeasy in the basement is going to feature artisanal drinks, small bites, and a vintage feel.

Looking forward to being in this same spot with a cocktail in hand soon!

While an exact opening date is still to be determined, it is definitely in sight. The details are coming together, from the lobby coffee shop featuring local roasts from Golden Valley Farms and handcrafted specialties from nearby small businesses to the chandelier in the lobby to the fitness center for ambitious guests. But at every opportunity, the group at Hotel Indigo is bringing those custom artistic flourishes to make sure this space is welcoming to all, whether you are staying for just a drink or a few nights.

Thanks to Kim Turnbaugh and Chris Berg of Onix Hospitality for the tour!
